What is IPSEC VPN?

An IPSec VPN is a VPN software that uses the IPSec protocol to create encrypted tunnels on the internet. It provides end-to-end encryption, which means data is scrambled at the computer and unscrambled at the receiving server.

IPSec VPN provides a Private and Secure IP communication over a Public Network Infrastructure. With this technology, different sites or users in different geographical areas can communicate over a network and this provides a very good resource utilization.

IPSec provide data confidentiality and integrity with its Security mechanisms. What are these mechanisms? Mainly these security mechanism are :

Authentication

Integrity Check

Encryption

IPsec is used for protecting sensitive data, such as financial transactions, medical records and corporate communications, as it’s transmitted across the network. It’s also used to secure virtual private networks (VPNs), where IPsec tunneling encrypts all data sent between two endpoints.

The IPsec standards define two distinct modes of IPsec operation, transport mode and tunnel mode. The modes do not affect the encoding of packets. The packets are protected by AH, ESP, or both in each mode.

The three main protocols comprising IPsec are: Authentication Header (AH), Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP), and Internet Key Exchange (IKE)
